And So You’re Back…

Love it…

Only George Bush could make the most neoliberal government in a generation nationalize large portions of the financial sector.

    So true!!!

I was wondering if anyone’s written a book called something like “Neoliberals are the real socialists and socialists are the real neoliberals” … or something provocatively wrong like that. But seriously, let’s take me for instance. I’m a socialist and a big fan of gov. bureaucracies. I think gov. bureaucracies often work just wonderfully (except when the politicians mess with them or underfund them as Bush has been doing his entire term). In my view, they are “da bomb” — and that puts me at odds with a good many of my leftist friends. But when I heard the government was taking over Fannie and Freddie, I said, “whoa nelly — let’s not get carried away here.” And when I listen to economists talk about this takeover on the radio, all the neoliberal freetrader hawkis are supporting it. Huh?

So, there’s me, the socialist literature critic, not wanting the Fannie and Freddie to be nationalized, and there are the neoliberal economists who do. Topsy turvey?

So, then I had to wonder, why am I opposed to it? Because I know that a neoliberal government in charge of a bank is… what? State capitalism? Shouldn’t I be for that? Or is it simply that I am for that unless it’s being done by a group of people so utterly untrustworthy that something in the deal smells like highway robbery to me — taking from the poor renters and giving to the rich bankers in the name of helping the middle-class homeowners.

But you might ask rhetorically, how is it taking from the poor renters? Well, it’s the biggest bailout in U.S. history, and that money’s gotta come from somewhere — i.e., social services, schools, public transportation, taxes… ahhhhh, that’s the ticket.
