Graffiti Fridays: Sparky Says Edition

Posted by at 10:04 pm under Graffiti Fridays

Graffiti isn’t corporate so it gets no respect
Hasn’t made a billion dollars for some corporation yet, so…

-KRS ONE, “Out for Fame”

As if graffiti energy drinks weren’t bad enough, we now have this, sent by our friend Sparky of scooter nation:

Delft

Delft China, “New York Style”

I agree with Sparky that this whole thing is hilarious, and maybe even transcends the hipster silliness that very obviously motivates the whole juxtaposition. That said, the SWELLS tag is just awful; if they really were serious about this, they would have gotten a good tagger to to rock the Delft. It’s claiming to be New York style, but I never heard of this kid, and that shit wouldn’t pass the New Jack test in any borough but Staten Island. Maybe some old-timer from before my time, but I doubt it. One thing is certain: KRS’s 1990′s proclamation on graffiti’s deficit of profitability is as dead as Clintonism. Once folks start making tongue-in-cheek Delft China out of your subculture, it’s time to turn it into something else.

I didn’t get a chance to take any flicks this week. It wasn’t for lack of trying. I took a roundabout way home from Unnamed Employer Institution this afternoon in order to catch some flicks for you, dear readers, but I saw nothing but buffed walls and new construction. Shitty marker tags on mailboxes. Depressing. But maybe I’ll grab some local tags tomorrow and hit you back with an addendum.

Saturday Addendum: On the way home from our weekly Target pilgrimage, I noticed this, on Western just south of Peterson. XMEN crew pieces, and details of same.

Finally, a blast from the past. One of the culprits over at Loungerati sent me this little gem – old school cat NET156. I was never particularly crazy about this style of tagging, but this guy is a legend. Here’s to the cell phone camera when you’re out doing the lounge thing:

But without the bo-bo hipster silliness, we wouldn’t have phrases like “they would have gotten a good tagger to to rock the Delft.” Rock the Delft would be an excellent album title.

Thanks for the “linky-love,” as Mommymatic would say.
